Though these two novels are written in different centuries, they bothinvolve teenagers’ growing issue and win Tim Winton Australian highest literaryaward—Miles Franklin Literary Award, meanwhile these two books are considered asWinton’s representative works which have received much attention and become moreand more popular since their publication. In Cloudstreet, the protagonists Rose’s andQuick’s growing journeys are two plot lines of the whole novel, their successfulentrance into adult world indicates the ending of the story. In another novel Breath,Winton describes the youth’s growing dilemma during Australian hippy era fromprotagonist Pike’s perspective. However, few scholars have dealt with the initiationtheme of the these two novels, especially for Cloudstreet, hardly a paper analyzes itsinitiation theme. Therefore, this thesis chooses two of Winton’s most representativenovels to explore the initiation theme embodied in them. By analyzing these twonovels from a new perspective, the writer hopes to make a slight contribute toAustralian literary studies and attract more attention to the growth issue reflected inWinton’s works.Both Cloudstreet and Breath belong to literary genre Bildungsroman, whichdeals with protagonists’ growing journey not only physiologically but also spiritually.In such novels, the protagonists usually become mature adults after a series offrustrations and doubts. In Cloudstreet, two na ve protagonists Quick and Rose bothsuffer different family tragedies which results in their unfavorable growth andimpedes their confirmation of their identity. In another novel Breath, protagonist Pikeis also a teenage boy when stories begins, his parents’ cowardly behaviors embarrasshim when he is in the crucial period of pursuing his identity . In order to get rid ofother people’s contempt and avoid becoming a simple, ordinary person like hisparents, he chooses an extreme and tortuous way to grow up.
