Chapter Two literature review

This chapter is constructed by the following two parts: the first part is the reviewof studies on impoliteness in which the definition of impoliteness, studies ofimpoliteness in foreign countries and at home are presented; the second part is anillustration of previous studies on The Merry Wives of Windsor literarily andlinguistically.

2.1 Review of Studies on Impoliteness
Since Brown＆Levinson (1978) put forward Politeness Principle for the firsttime, it soon became the focuses of a great number of scholars. However,impoliteness that threatens interactant’s faces and leads to the disharmoniousinterpersonal relationship in interaction has been neglected for a long time. ButImpoliteness is not a marginal phenomenon, it is indispensable in speechcommunication. Therefore, it is essential and significant to carry out researches onimpoliteness. Till the 1970s to 1980s, some Western scholars found out that theexisting politeness theories and principles cannot interpret impoliteness in interactionadequately. Therefore, they began to conduct studies on impoliteness. Form then on,impoliteness starts to develop when those scholars begin to realize the significanceand necessity of impoliteness. Although it has a relatively short history, impolitenessactually has a rapid development in Western countries because of many scholars’contribution to this field. Besides, some systematic theories and models ofimpoliteness have been set up.

2.2 Studies on The Merry Wives of Windsor
William Shakespeare is the greatest dramatist in the history of English literature.Besides, he is not only an outstanding dramatist who has created thirty-eight dramas,but also he is a prominent poet who has written one hundred and fifty-four sonnets,two long narrative poems as well as a small number of other verses. Thus he is alsocalled Bard of Avon and he is the first poet-laureate. As the greatest dramatist,William Shakespeare has gained lots of compliments from people in different fields.For example, Max, a German philosopher, sociologist, economist who regards him as“the greatest dramatic genius”; Goethe, a German writer, philosopher and scientistmakes comments that William Shakespeare is “infinite and boundless”; AlexandreDumas, a well-known French romantic writer, who states that “creating the most isthat Shakespeare” and Shakespeare is regarded as “the second only to God” byDumas.The Merry Wives of Windsor which does not belong to one of the main-trendcomedies of William Shakespeare, but it is considered to be a typical WilliamShakespeare’s drama. It is a simplified comedy full of creativity and humor. It ownssome comedic characteristics, which contains a plenty of sarcasms and lots ofviolations against old tradition and customs. It manifests a strong moral tendency andshows to take a romantic attitude towards love and marriage.
