4.1 A Brief Introduction of The Merry Wives of Windsor

The Merry Wives of Windsor is one of William Shakespeare’s well-knowncomedies which was first published in the year of 1598. It occupies a special positionamong all William Shakespeare’s masterpieces, since it is the only work drawing itsmaterials from real and vivid life directly. Friedrich Von Engles, a great Germanthinker, philosopher, educationalist speaks highly of The Merry Wives of Windsor dueto its incomparable vitality and reality. Moreover, it owns an unique artistic styleamong all Shakespeare’s works. The Merry Wives of Windsor tells a story that SirJohn Falstaff, a declining knight who tries to seduce Mistress Ford along withMistress Page by sending them the letter of same content. He attempts to obtain theirhusbands’ wealth desperately. However, the two wives decide to cooperate with eachother after comparing their letters from Falstaff. They manage to make a buffoon ofFalstaff for three times. Finally, Falstaff reaps what he sows, because he is not sincere,but tries to deceive and seduce the two ladies for their husband’s money.

Conclusion

This chapter comes to the final part of the whole thesis. Within this part, theauthor makes a summary and a review of the whole thesis. This chapter involves themajor findings, the implications of the present research. Last but not least, this thesiswill put forward some limitations to the present research, paving the way for furtherand deeper research into impoliteness.In this thesis, the author at first makes an overall literature review which is aboutthe study of impoliteness at home and abroad as well as the study of The Merry Wivesof Windsor. This present research finds out that the study of impoliteness developsfast. Therefore, some innovative systematic models come into being even though it isa relatively new branch in the field of pragmatics. The author has applies impolitenesstheory to conducting research on dramatic dialogues, which provides a newperspective for the study of drama. Then, the author presents the analyticalframework for the present study which is based on Bousfield’ (2008) impolitenessmodel. After that, the author has listed different instances of impoliteness strategiesunder the categories of on-record and off-record impoliteness. Next, the authoranalyzes the pragmastylistic functions of various kinds of impoliteness strategies incharacters’ dialogues from The Merry Wives of Windsor.
