The Pakistan mobile telecommunication market and rivalry models

As already discussed above Pakistan mobile telecommunication market consists of some of the largest and most experienced telecom companies in the world that includes Mobilink (Orascom Group), Telenor (Norway Mobile Company), Ufone (PTML and partially owned by Etisalat), Warid Telecom (Abu Dhabi Group), and finally ZONG (China Mobile Company). Recently on 3rd August 2010, the chairman of PTA Dr Muhammad Yaseen announced in seminar that 3G (UMTS) licences will be auctioned in 3 to 4 months time once the policy framework has been finalized by ministry. He also said that cellular operators have expressed apprehension with regard to launch of 3G technology. Furthermore it was more or less confirmed that 3G licenses would be granted to only 3 mobile operators in Pakistan where the most favourite contenders to have the 3G (UMTS) licenses seems to be Mobilink, Telenor and Ufone (PTML) due to their sheer size, market share and availability of substantial funds.

The two models that we have taken into account are firstly “Rivalry under price and quantity uncertainty” and secondly “Rivalry under revenue and investment cost uncertainty” which were both taken from an article by Paxson and Pinto (2004) “THIRD GENERATION MOBILE GAMES - An application of real competition games”. One important point that is required to be taken into account is that both these models were developed for duopoly market whereas in my research with respect to commercialization of 3G (UMTS) technology in Pakistan, I am considering the fact that 3G (UMTS) license would be granted to only 3 cellular operators in Pakistan. Therefore as a consequence the following scenario is not ideal with respect to the application of these duopoly models because of which I have to consider two companies as one either in the role of leader or follower in order to obtain practical and realistic results.
