Chapter 2 Translation Process
2.1 Analysis of Text Type
Translation text analysis firstly is text type. The source text type belongs to the categoryof scientific and technological text. In English text translation, EST translation has strongcharacteristics of scientific professionalism, rigorous logic, objective accuracy, practicalityand applicability. German translator Katharina Reiss (1971) makes a summary of the texttype, and holds the opinion that the text can be divided into three types, that is, “expressivetext”, “informative text” and “operative text”. “Expressive text” mainly refers to the text ofthe sender’s attitude towards all people and things, paying attention to the rendering andvisual description of the text, such as poetry, prose, proverbs and so on. “Operative text”refers to a kind of text that urges the reader to produce some kind of action and changethrough text rendering. The focus of this kind of text is the target reader, and the purpose is toproduce the effect of text rendering, such as advertising, speech and so on. “Informative text”,that is, a kind of text that describes information, facts and knowledge, pays attention to thecontent but neglects the form of expression, and the language is characterized by simplicity,objectivity, strict logic and so on. The language features and main contents of this kind ofinformation text serve the transmission of information for specific readers. Such as naturalScience, scientific and technological documents, etc. Among them, this translation practice ofscientific and technological translation belongs to informative text. The content of this articleis about food biotechnology, and most of the readers are professional researchers in relatedfields, so there are a large number of technical terms, also known as technical words. In thepre-translation preparation, I have read a large number of parallel texts in the practice report,and has done nearly 100,000 words of translation practice in the field of food biotechnology,which provides me a basically understanding of the lexical and linguistic features of such translated texts.
2.2 Language Feature
In view of language features of biotechnology texts, first of all, at the lexical level, suchtexts are characterized by the use of technical terms and polysemous words. Terminology inscientific texts is also called technical words, which is generally characterized by polysemy,repeated in articles, and proper nouns in this field, such as solution is no longer translated as“解决办法” (Oxford Dictionary), but translated into “溶液” (Oxford Dictionary), such as“spiked” is no longer translated as “有尖刺的” (Oxford Dictionary), but as “加标”. Secondly,these kinds of texts also contain a large number of technical terms, such as “glucosemonohydrate”, translated as “单水葡萄糖”, “Erythritol”, translated as “赤藻糖醇”, and“Infant formula”, translated as “婴儿配方奶粉”.
