In this example sentence, “ill-equipped” is a compound word. The original meaning of “ill-equipped” is “装备不完善的；技术不够的”. As for the English grammar, there is an implicit negation in this sentence. The form of English implicit negation seems positive, but in fact it contains negative meaning. The politeness principle in pragmatics has been fully reflected in the implicit negation of English, especially the application of some standards such as appropriateness, praise and sympathy.

5.1 Major Findings

The translation report discusses the guiding significance of Newmark’s translation theories in English-Chinese translation of popular science texts.

In one aspect, communicative translation plays a guiding role in ensuring the popularity and fluency of popular science text. The case analysis above has shown that six translation methods or techniques adopted under the guidance of communicative translation solve the difficulties that encountered in the process of translation. The summaries of these six translation methods or techniques are as follows: free translation can make translation more faithful to the original text when literal translation leads to ambiguity. Annotation can supplement the relevant information to avoid readers’ confusion. Idiomatic translation is quite similar to “Domestication”, which can not only enhance the readability of the target text but also help readers better understand the target text. Recasting translation plays an important role in guaranteeing the fluency of the target language. With amplification, the clarity of the meaning of the target text can be achieved. Through conversion, the translation can be more natural by conforming to the expression habits of the target language.

On the other side, semantic translation plays an important auxiliary role in the translation of popular science text. Through semantic translation, the structure, rhetoric and cultural information of the source language can be preserved, and in the meanwhile, the faithfulness and accuracy of the target text can be also ensured. The functions of linear translation and literal translation adopted under the guidance of semantic translation are as follows: linear translation is faithful to the source text to the greatest extent, with retaining the basic sentence patterns and grammatical structures; when the rhetorical devices and grammatical structures of the source text and the target text are identical or basically in the same pattern, literal translation can be adopted to retain the rhetorical color and cultural image of the source text.
