5.1 Summary of Major Findings

A quantitative research that includes two questionnaires for 150 first-grade juniorhigh school students is conducted to investigate the overall situation of Englishlearning motivation and teacher-student relationship, and then to explore whetherthere any significant difference existing in different genders and academicperformance of these two variables respectively. Lastly, it examines thecharacteristics of correlation between teacher-student relationship and students’learning motivation in the first year of junior high school. The summary of the majorfindings is presented in specific as follows.

For the first research question, as the data have shown, students’ English learningmotivation in the first year of junior high school is at a medium level which means thelevel of enthusiasm and motivation of students learning English is not ideal.Instrumental motivation is the leading English learning motivation for first-gradejunior high school students, followed by integrative motivation in terms of students’English learning motivation in general. Furthermore, of both integrative andinstrumental motivation, female students perform better than male students.

For the second research question, from the results talked about above, it can besaid that the overall teacher-student relationship in the first year of junior high schoolis relatively ideal. The positive type of teacher-student relationship is at a pretty highlevel, and the negative type is at a low level relatively. Most of the students(bothfemale and male students) have a pretty strong attachment to their English teachersand want to be close to them, but female students have better closeness andattachment relationship than that of male students.

6.1 Summary of the Study

The study is mainly carried out to analyze the overall situation of students'learning motivation and teacher-student relationship in the first year of junior highschool, as well as explore the characteristic of their correlation. Two questionnairesare adopted in the study, and 150 first-grade junior high school students are chosen asparticipants. Motivation Questionnaire adopts the English Learning MotivationQuestionnaire compiled by Zeng Dan (2009), which is based on the classification offoreign language learning motivations by Gao Yihong et al. (2003) and some foreignscholars, and through empirical research. It consists of two dimensions: integrativemotivation and instrumental motivation, and 17 items.
