pective,  the  cultivation  of  intercultural  awareness  in English  teaching  is  an  important  part  of  effective  English  teaching,  while  previous studies on the relationship between intercultural awareness and teaching effect of rural nglish teachers are rare. Guided by Byram’ s theory of intercultural communication competence,  this  study  analyzes  the  current  situation  of  rural  English  teachers’  intercultural  awareness  and  the  development  of  intercultural  teaching,  finds  out  the problems  and  explores  the  reasons,  and  further  enriches  the  content  of  intercultural communication  theory  to  provide  more  accurate  and  detailed  research  data.  At  the same time, the author draws on various theories and practical experience at home and abroad  to  explore  effective  models  and  strategies  for  cultivating  intercultural awareness  of  rural  English  teachers,  to  improve  the  quality  of  teachers  and  promote the improvement of English teaching quality in rural areas. 

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Relevant Concepts

2.1.1 Intercultural Awareness

Hanvey  (1979)  first  proposed  the  concept  of  intercultural  awareness. Intercultural  awareness  refers  to  the  sensitivity  of  participants  to  cultural  factors  in intercultural communication. 

Hu  Wenzhong  and  Gao  Yihong  (1997)  argue  that  intercultural  awareness  is  an ability to understand foreign culture in the socio-cultural competence model diagram. A person with this kind of understanding will also have a very rational insight and a perceptual empathy. 

Bi  Jiwan  (1998)  believes  that  intercultural  awareness  refers  not  only  to  the sensitivity  to  foreign  cultures,  but  also  to  a  positive  awareness  that  promotes  the integration of target culture and native culture. Intercultural awareness requires people to recognize their own cultural attributes, but also based on the same understanding to explore  the  outstanding  characteristics  of  other  cultures.  Only  in  this  way  can  they effectively  understand  the  behaviors  of  people  from  other  cultures  in  intercultural communication.  He  believes  that  the  connotation  of  cultural  awareness  includes learning and understanding of different cultures, as well as cultural equality, cultural understanding and cultural exchange.
