CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Vocabulary learning is central to second Language Acquisition(SLA).Vocabulary has been recognized as a priority in foreign language teaching andlearning just as Wilkins,a British linguist,emphasizes the importance of vocabularylearning by giving his famous words,“The fact is that while without grammar verylittle can be conveyed,without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”.(Wilkins,1972)The teaching of vocabulary is crucial to learners’achievement and plays an importantrole in improving students’overall English proficiency.However,it is not easy forEnglish learners to build a certain vocabulary.Most students spend a lot of time onEnglish words but do not remember and use them well.Therefore,teachers arelooking for a suitable method to make vocabulary teaching more effective.

Experts have developed and implemented many approaches to teachingvocabulary.Over the past century,foreign language teachers have experimented withdifferent teaching methods in their classrooms.Among them,explicit teaching andimplicit teaching are two important methods in the practice of vocabulary.And thetopic about which method to use specifically has been discussed in the process ofvocabulary teaching.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study

Studies have shown the importance of explicit and implicit teaching invocabulary teaching.However,many previous studies have discussed the role andeffectiveness of explicit and implicit teaching in vocabulary teaching,and mainlytargeted at college students,with less discussion on junior high school students;mostof them are based on the two methods and explore feasibility analysis.In China,review of the literature shows that most studies aim at the importance of grammar,while few studies focus on how teachers use the two methods to teach vocabulary inthe classroom.The purpose of this study is to integrate and analyze the characteristics of explicit and implicit teaching practices in junior high school English vocabularyteaching,and to explore the teaching practices and application status of junior highschool English teachers from the perspective of teachers’perception.

Theoretically,this study will further deepen teachers’understanding of explicitand implicit vocabulary teaching and provide a theoretical supplement to the teachingof vocabulary in junior high school English classrooms in China.Previous researchsubjects mainly focused on the classroom process of foreign universities or grammarclasses,which means that the research data and results do not match those of juniorhigh schools.Therefore,this study will summarize relevant experience and lay thefoundation for relevant research by analyzing the characteristics of teachers’use andpractice.

CHAPTER TWO LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Key Concepts

Research on concepts related to explicit and implicit has received much attentionin the fields of cognitive psychology and second language acquisition.Therefore,it isnecessary to define the core concepts like explicit and implicit knowledge,explicitand implicit learning,and explicit and implicit teaching,and to provide a relevantreview and discussion based on previous studies.
