can also give us an opportunity to find out the errors of Chinesestudents' English pronunciation. Students need correction on their pronunciation errors andguidance in pronunciation learning. Linguists and teachers thus should make joint effortsand cope with errors in English majors' English pronunciation.There has been limited research ever made to investigate how much Chinese collegeEnglish majors know about English phonetics and how well they use such knowledge. It isvery important that students should know how to self-correct their own errors when theyhave problems in English pronunciation. So it is important and necessary to conductresearch on English pronunciation of English majors', focusing on freshmen of Englishmajors. Possible and critical factors can be found out in the whole process of the research.According to some theories about language transfer, Chinese students could leam Englishpronunciation by using the phonetic knowledge of their mother tongue for Reference.


Chapter One literature review


This chapter is the literature review of this study. It first reviews the theories ofphonetics and phonology. It then discusses the previous studies on English pronunciation.Lastly, it introduces the theory of language transfer and related studies.


1.1 Phonetics & Phonology
Matthews (2000: 277) defined phonetics as "the study of the nature, production, andperception of sounds of speech, in abstraction from the phonology of any specificlanguage". Odden (2008: 4) described it as “the concrete instrumentally measurablephysical properties and production of these cognitive speech sounds,,. There are two basicaspects of speech sounds as they are studied in phonetics, acoustics and articulation. Theformer is the study of the properties of the physical sound wave that we hear. The latter isthe study of how to modify the shape of the vocal tract, thereby producing a certainacoustic output (sound).In China, there is no English environment for acquisition except by learning. It isnecessary for English learners, especially adult learners to command certain knowledgeabout organs of speech. It is useful for an English learner to know something about place,structure, and function of speech organs.
Cruttenden (2001; 8) stated that “it is important toexamine the articulatory stage (the speech mechanism) to discover how the various organsbehave in order to produce the sounds of speech". For the two different languages, Englishand Chinese, they have their own phonetic characteristics. It is learners' obligations to havetheir organs of speech accustom to the language they are learning.One important attribute of phonetics is its distinctive function, which is affected bydifferent phonemes. Phonemes can be divided into segmental phonemes andsupra-segmental phonemes. Sometimes “a distinction is made between the segmentalphonemes (i.e. the vowels and consonants of a language) and the supra-segmentals, i.e.such sound phenomena as accent and intonation, which may stretch over more than onesegment”(Richards & Schmidt,2003; 473).
