[Abs t ract ]A Farewell to Arms is the most representative work of Ernest Hemingway , the famous author in America. His style of writing is widely used by then writers and new generation writers. Therefore , studying Hemingway ’s techniques of writing is useful for bet ter understanding the novel . Here , the main techniques of writing are analyzed.
Hemingway was a novelist and short story writer whobecame one of the best - known American authors of lastcentury . His lean , economical style has been widely cop2ied by other writers , and his stories of courage in the faceof t ragedy are read by each new generation . Hemingway ’stalent in novel writing was widely admired at his time anddraws much critical at tention now. The critic , AnthonyBurgess , calls him the major prose innovator of the centu2ry. Another critic , Robort scholes , places him alongsidethe other major figures of modern fiction since Flaubert .Many other critics and writers ,both in China and in theWestern count ries , hold the same admiration as AnthonyBurgess and Robert Scholes .
A Farewel l to A rms , Hemingway’ s mature work ,made him a famous author . Published just when he pas2sed his thirtieth birthday , it brought him the kind of pub2lic and critical acclaim he had been seeking . In A Fare2wel l to A rms , the writer port rays an American Lieutenantfighting in Italy in the First World War , just as Heming2way himself did . The Lieutenant writes about the war ,his love for Catherine Barkley , and her death , in order todevastat the nature of his experience . The novel is well -plot ted and the characters are so well - port rayed that thereader seams to be able to see them , to hear them talk ,and to feel their rhythm of life . So the reader ’s at tention isnaturally drawn by the author ’s ext roardinary technigres.A Farewel l to A rms can be read as a footnote to TheS un A lso Rises in that it explains how people like J akeBarnes come to behave the way they do . In the history ofthe novel , how to describe people in the war remains achallenge to novel writers . Fortunately we have manywriters , f rom Stephen Crane to John Dos Passos , to ex2periment and explore in this field ,and they have achieveda lot s , too . These writers had presented the pathos andendurance and gallant ry of the individual caught and man2gled in the great anonymous mechanism of modern warfought for reasons that the individual could not understand, found insufficient to justify the event , or believed to beno reasons at all . So A Farewel l to A rms was not thefirst book to record the plight of the men and women who, because of the war , had been unable to come to termwith life in the old way . But by reading it , one can feelthat probably no other book has caught so well as thest rangeness in the army for an American in Europe duringthe war . Some critics call it the greatest book to havebeen writ ten about Word War I ,although it is not only awar novel . Therefore an analyses of Hemingway’ s tech2niques of writing might be useful for bet ter understandingof the characters and the novel it self .
The first technique to be discussed may be called "the dramatizing technique ’ ’ . Like Tame Joyce , Heming2way admired and was influenced by Elizabethan drama. He was quite capable of dramatizing the st ructure of thenovel to achieve special effect s . The st ructure of A Fare2wel l to A rms is similar to the st ructure found in 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
