This dramatic st ructure powerfullyat t ract s the reader ’s at tention and bestows a t ragedy colorto the whole novel . Hemingway ’s peculiar " monologue ’ ’ also does muchto the characterization . The most dramatic use of Frederic’s monologue occurs at the end , when Catherine is in laborand Frederic is af raid she might die :This was the price you paid for sleeping together .This was the end of the t rap . This was what people gotfor loving each other So they got her in the end . You nev2er got away with anything . Get away hell ! It would havebeen the same if we had been married fif ty times . Andwhat if she should die ? She won ’t die . People don ’t die inchildbirth nowadays . That was what all husbands thought. Yes , but what if she should die ? She can ’t , I tell you .Don ’t be a fool . It ’s just a bad time but what if she shoulddie ? She won ’t . She ’s all right . But what if she shoulddie ? She can ’t die . But what if she should die ? Hey ,what about that ?What if she should die ?[1 ] (P227)
This is the dialogue of tow antithetical selves of Fre2dric : one is responsive to the moral code of the day andfeels guilty of not marrying Catherine . The other selfconsiders such a code irrelevant to what is happening andreject s the idea that they are being punished for violating it. One self t ries to minimize the gravity of the situation e2ven as the other cannot forget the danger . The fear - of -death self ends the dialogue as the doctor comes into theroom . In this passage ,Hemingway makes effective use ofmonologue by split ting it into two , thus heightening thesuspense while dramatizing Frederic ’s dialogic selves ." The commentary technique ’ ’ is also used by Hem2ingway in his characterization . Unlike J ane Austen andGeorge Eliot put ting their own wit ty sayings in the middleof narration , Hemingway is skillfully juxtaposing Freder2ic and Catherine ’s conversation with Frederic ’s commentary. Here is Frederic ’s rendering of the part of his third meet2ing with Catherine :" You did say you love me ,didn ’t you ?’ ’" yes , ’ ’ I lied , " I love you . ’ ’ I had not said it before ." And you call me Catherine ?’ ’" Catherine . " We walked on a way and were stoppedunder a t ree ." Say , I ’ve come back to the night ? ""Oh ,darling , you have come back , haven ’t you ? "" Yes . "" I love you so and it ’s been awful . You won ’t go a2way ? " I kiss both her shut eyes . I thought she was prob2ably a lit tle crazy . It was all right if she was . I did notcare what I was get ting into . This was bet ter than goingevery evening to the house for officers where the girlsclimbed all over you and put your capon backward as asign of affection between their t rips up stairs with brotherofficers . I knew I did not love Catherine Barkley nor hadany idea of loving her . This was a game , like bridge , inwhich you said things instead of playing cards . Likebridge you had to pretend you were playing for money orplaying for same stakes . Nobody had mentioned what thestakes were . It
