摘要:As a channel to organize the class, to manage the class, teacher directive plays a crucialrole in the whole process of teaching and learning. It is generally believed that the quality ofthe teacher directives not only affects the teachers' teaching effect, but also is closely relatedto the students' performance in the EFL classrooms

er talk is one of the elements to influence the learner's acquisition.The study of teacher directive today is a kind of extended one based on the previous study.From the perspective of teaching, surveying the teacher talk can leave the teachers andresearchers get to know the nature and the characteristics of teacher talk. The study today is tofurther reveal the nature of teacher directive and its practical realization in the real languageclassroom. More practically speaking, if the teacher talk can be investigated closely in thelanguage classroom, teachers can speculate their own words or other workmates' and furtherget some insight through recording and analyzing their talk. According to Ellis (1985),interest in the language of classroom has grown steadily in recent years "by rejection oflanguage teaching method as the principal determinant of successful learning." Studying onteacher talk, on teacher directive can be a chance for the teachers to find out the problemsunderlying their talk and come up solutions in the coming days. What's more, if the teachershave the awareness of studying teacher talk, it is not far for them to improve their autonomy.From the perspective of critical classroom discourse analysis, the process of analyzing theteacher talk, teacher directive can be a process of enhancing mutual understanding betweenthe students and the teachers. Analyzing teacher talk can improve teaching performance andacademic achievement. Good directives have functions to give students clear instructions forprocedure of tasks and invoke students' motivations. (Williams, Burden, 2005).From this view,directives are means for students to learn knowledge in target languages in genuine class.Why did the current research idea spring? There are two reasons which contribute to theresult. Firstly, as a master student who mainly studies discourse and foreign language teaching,an overall method to take both into account is to investigate teacher talk among which teacherdirective is closely related to the current popular teaching method, task-based methodadvocated in the field of teaching. Consequently, the idea of studying teacher directive comesup. In addition, Professor Chen Xiao tang's work named "An Analysis of English Teachers'Classroom Discourse" has inspired the researcher. In his work, instead of providing a lot ofboring theories, he presents a large number of vivid examples occurring in the EFL classroomand analyzes those examples from the critical perspective which is really a brand-newperspective in teacher talk field. From his work, the researcher gets some inspiration that thestudy of teacher talk is encouraging and decides to narrow down the study to a point, oneelement of teacher talk, teacher directive which is really worth investigating further.

 

1.3 Purpose of the Research
As to the research on the teacher directive, foreign researchers mainly put forward someguidelines based on their teaching experience. Few researches focus on the real classroomdiscourse and the specific discourse in certain context. In addition, in the foreign countries,directives can be the research object not only in the language class, but also in the othercourses classroom, such as in the chorus. In China, The studies on directives in teacher talkare mainly focused on the middle schools and elementary schools (Zhu donghua, 2002;Heanping,2003).
