摘要:The principle aim of this thesis is to explore an innovative and effective modelfor Cultural Corner teaching which is practiced by applying MIT on the premise ofthe latest New English Curriculum Standard.
2.2 Previous Study on Culture Teaching Approaches
Along the history of language teaching, culture has always been attached muchimportance to for its crucial role in shaping and influencing the teaching of language. Thus, scholars have attempted to explore different approaches for culture teaching.The focus of teaching shifts from knowledge-focused to behavior-focused and thento meaning-focused approach which advocates the integration of teaching cultureboth explicitly and implicitly (Chen Shen, 1999). The conventional approach to teach culture is to add explicit cultural studies toforeign language programs. Influenced by anthropological studies, the scope ofteaching has been extended from the literature, history or geography of foreigncountries to a study of the ways of life of foreign people which symbolizes aknowledge-focused approach.Under such an approach, language teachers lead a dominant role in the wholeclass, imparting explicit introduction and explanation of culture elements to students.Though this teacher-centered and knowledge-oriented approach is still widelyadopted today as it directly helps broaden students’ horizon of foreign culture, thecontent about foreign culture can only be relatively explicit and due to the limitationof time and a lack of input in foreign language classrooms, the knowledge-focusedapproach cannot cover everything which the framework of culture includes.
