Chapter Two  literature review

2.1 Previous Studies of English Inversion and English Inversion Teaching

English inversion is a commonly used sentence structure in people’s daily life, and many scholars have done a lot of research on English inversion and English inversion teaching. It is necessary to have an comprehensive review of English inversion in order to better understand it. Therefore, this section provides a literature review of English inversion and English inversion teaching, laying the foundations for the present study.  

2.1.1 Definitions and Classifications of English Inversion

2.1.1.1 The Definitions of English Inversion

Generally speaking, the “SVO” structure is the natural order of the sentence. However, some sentences will break this rule with a structure of the predicate before the subject, which is called inversion. Dozens of scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of research on this subject.

Cambridge dictionary demonstrates that inversion occurs when the normal order of a structure is reversed. Oxford Concise Dictionary of Literary Terms(2000) gives a more specific explanation to inversion, in which inversion is defined as the reversal of the natural order of sentence, commonly used in poems to serve as the turning around of a metrical terms. Moreover, in Merriam-Webster’s dictionary(1976), inversion is generally stated as “a reversal of position, order, form, or the relationship between different components in the sentences”(Gove, 1976). And in sentence level, it usually refers to the change that occurs in normal word order of natural sentence or the placement of a verb before its subject(Gove, 1976).

In spite of the definitions in dictionaries, many linguists and scholars at home and abroad have proposed numerous definitions of inversion as well. Kittredge(1913) points out it is the opposite word order of “verb-subject” structure. Similar to Kittredge’s definition, Quirk(1985) contends that one of the characteristics of the inverted structure is that is it accompanied with the change of the position of the elements in a sentence, especially the fronting of an element. Green(1982) defines inversion as “those declarative sentence where the subject follows part or all of its verb position”. From the rhetoric level, it is suggested that the inverted structure is commonly used in the world to achieve the rhyme of the sentence and highlight the sense(Holman, 1980). According to Birner(1994), inversion is a special sentence structure in which the logical subject appears after the predicate verb.

2.2 An Introduction to FGT

Figure-Ground theory (FGT) serves as a major theoretical support for the cognitive analysis of English inversion in this study. In this section, the author gives an introduction to the FGT, which contains the origin and the characteristics of FGT.
