5.1 Summary of Research Findings
This study investigates the application of stratified teaching and the effects of stratified teaching on students’ English reading performance, interest and attitude towards English reading. Through conducting a 13-week stratified teaching experiment in a senior high school in Chengdu and using research methods such as questionnaire, tests, and interview, the major findings of this study are made as follow.
Firstly, before implementing stratified teaching, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the situation of students to stratify the students into different levels. In the process of stratified teaching, this study mainly implements stratified teaching from the aspects of students’ learning objectives, classroom questioning, group cooperation, and homework. In the process of this experiment, the stratification of students is mainly combined with the pre-test scores and the data analysis of two pre-test questionnaires in the experimental class. Then, the researcher makes small adjustments based on the feedback of the student’s English teacher on students’ learning situation. In addition, during the process of stratified teaching, this study found that there may be inappropriate stratification for a small number of students in the early stage, and made corresponding adjustments after that. Therefore, teachers should consider students’ learning situation from multiple aspects, such as their performance in the classroom, in their teaching and dynamically adjust according to their changes.
Secondly, through the analysis of questionnaires’ data and interview results, it is indicated that stratified teaching has a significant effect on arousing students’ reading interest and improving attitude. After implementing stratified teaching, students’ interest in English reading learning has improved. According to the questionnaire and interview results, the majority of students show their interest in English reading classes and are fully involved in the classroom. Based on the feedback from students after a 13-week experiment of stratified teaching, most students express that this new reading teaching model can effectively promote their English reading learning. In addition, some students who are not very interested in English reading or even English learning are also involved in classroom activities and become more interested in English reading.
