2.2.1 Related Studies Abroad
(1) The Measurement of Enjoyment
The first strand focuses on measurement of enjoyment in foreign language class. There aretwo methods to measure enjoyment in foreign language class, one way is to use instrument likescale to reveal students’ self-perception toward enjoyment, the other is to adopt idiodynamicmethod to capture the dynamic enjoyment fluctuations in language learning process.
Adopting a large-scale international sample from all over the world, representing 90different nationalities, Dewaele and MacIntyre (2014) developed a 21-item Foreign LanguageEnjoyment Scale (FLES), by adapting seven items from the Interest/Enjoyment subscale of Ryan,Connell and Plant’s (1990). Within this study, they also revealed that FLE and FLA arenegatively related but independent dimensions. Using the same dataset, Dewaele and MacIntyre(2016) further reduced the 21 items FLES to 14 items FLES and confirmed a two-factor structureof the FLES by Principal Component Analysis: FLE-Social and FLE-Private. FLE-Social refersto the positive feelings boosted by encouraging peers, nice teachers and a supportiveenvironment while FLE-Private means thoughts and feelings coalescing around a sense ofaccomplishment. The scale was later shortened to a new 10-item version by using participantsfrom a single London FL context, but retaining three new FLE dimensions: FLE-Social,FLE-Private, and peer-controlled versus teacher-controlled positive (Dewaele & Dewaele, 2017),which is distinctive from the original two-factor structure confirmed in the international sample.

The research shows that teaching content influences senior high students’ enjoyment in EFLclass. As the textbook is the base for teaching content, it is suggested that the textbook designerstake the following points into consideration when designing textbooks for senior high schoolstudents.
First, the language material in textbook is better to be authentic because students reporthaving enjoyment in learning authentic language in EFL class. The authentic language materialrefers to the language used by people in reality rather than made up. Richards (2001) found thatthe authentic language material motivates students’ interest in studying language, better tailors tothe students’ need and supports teachers to have creative teaching.
