Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Relevant Concepts

This section is divided into six parts.It includes some relevant research on the KWLmodel,a definition of the QAR strategy and its classification,a definition of the QARstrategy-assisted KWL reading model,and a definition of English reading and its model.Anda definition of reading interest and classroom participation.

2.1.1 Know-What-Learn(KWL)model

2.1.1.1 Definition of the Know-What-Learn(KWL)model

The KWL model was proposed by Ogle(1986)first.In his view,the KWL model is alearning method designed by teachers and students expected to translate into student-directedlearning.It is a method of teaching that promotes active reading by activating students’background knowledge.The model is mainly used in the context of reading expository texts.It is divided into three basic steps:K(What I know)is what is known,which is thebackground knowledge that students already have in relation to the topic of study;W(What Iwant to know)is what they want to know,that is to say,what they expect to learn throughreading,and they ask questions to clarify their learning objectives;L(What I have learned)islearning,that is to say,students summarize what they have learned after reading the material.The process of knowing facilitates the integration of relevant existing schemata and makesstudents more psychologically receptive to new learning;the process of wanting to knowreflects the willingness and interest in learning that results from self-cognitive choices.Ithelps to make reading more active and effective.

Ogle(1992)claimed that KWL is an acronym for“Know,”“Want to know,”and“Learn.”He stated that“the three letters in KWL represent the three processes of reading instruction:what students know,what they want to know,and finally,what they learn.Simply put,in theKWL model,the letter K means I know,the letter W means I want to know,and the letter Lmeans what I have learned or what I still need to learn from the new curriculum.”

2.2 Theoretical Basis

This section deals with three theoretical foundations based on this topic.The threetheories include Constructivist,Meta-cognition,and Schema theory.

2.2.1 Constructivist learning theory
