1.1  INTRODUCTION

This handbook is designed to assist MSc and MA students and staff in the completion of the dissertation unit. It gives guidelines to staff involved with the  https://www.51lunwen.org/handbook/ supervision of postgraduate students with the completion of the dissertation unit and it also provides valuable advice to students on the successful completion of their chosen topic for the dissertation.

1.2  SELECTING A TOPIC

In selecting a topic for research, students are advised to:
• put two/three initial ideas on paper
• identify keywords
• perform brief general search for information 
• read around the potential topics and decide on the topic for research.

1.3 CONSULTATION WITH SUPERVISOR

• Make an appointment to see your supervisor as soon as possible
• At this meeting your chosen topic should be discussed with your supervisor and agreed. The chosen topic should be feasible, achievable and academically rigorous
• Discuss sources of secondary data relating to the research topic. Examples could be: books, www, journals, electronic media, newspapers, popular press, information from industry etc.

1.4  THE TOPIC SHOULD

• be of interest to the researcher (otherwise there is a danger of boredom setting in as you progress with the research)
• lend itself to academic rigour

Note:  The literature base must be grounded in the discipline of the award. For example:
