摘要:The quality of the text, its presentation, style, structure, and layout will either detract from or enhance the contents of your dissertation, and therefore affect the assessment.

Introduction

The way we speak and write depends on the context and the audience, namely who we are communicating with and the aim of the communication. A dissertation should be written using formal academic writing. It is important to consider the level of prior knowledge of the likely reader of your dissertation; a general level of technical literacy may be assumed, but expert knowledge of the particular topic should not.

The completed dissertation represents you, your knowledge, your analytical abilities and your communication skills. It is essential that the text and structure clearly communicate what you want to say, and that you avoid ambiguity. You therefore need to work to develop and improve your academic writing.
If you require support to develop your English academic writing remember that support is available from the University Language Centre. A very helpful and useful resource for all students is the Academic PhraseBank on the University’s web site at:
What is academic writing?
Academic writing is a particular form of formal writing and it is used for any academic work such as dissertations and academic papers. You should use academic writing to present your dissertation.
The main characteristics of academic writing are listed below.
• Academic writing is formal and therefore written in a formal style, so colloquial words or phrases should not be used.
• Academic writing aims to deal with complex information and ideas in a rigorous manner. It requires the author to justify and provide evidence for any claims or conclusions made. Bold assertions or unsubstantiated statements, no matter how reasonable, or how widely held, should not be made without supporting justification.
Academic writing therefore has to be referenced correctly.
• Generally, in academic writing, there is one central theme (the aim) and all parts support that main theme.
• Academic writing is precise and accurate; therefore the information given and the way
it is presented should be precise and unambiguous. This means that the most
appropriate words and terminology must be used and phrasing should be selected with care.
• Academic writing is objective. It is therefore written in the third person and the main focus is on the evidence and arguments put forward.
• Contentious material can be very valuable if presented in a balanced and well argued manner. What should be avoided is emotive writing, such as journalistic diatribe or polemic.
• Academic writing should add to knowledge, give greater understanding of, or look at, an area of academic interest in a new way.
Academic writing is an important part of learning, thinking and understanding; as Booth,
Colomb and Williams (2008) said "... we write so that we can think better, remember more, and see more clearly".
Academic writing should present the reader with an informed argument. It is not enough to state your opinion, you need to give evidence for any claims you make. You are expected to explain how you came to hold your opinion, and this is done by providing the reader with good reasoning and good evidence.

The importance of critical reading

It is a widely held belief that you cannot write well until you learn how to read well. Reading well involves reading regularly, readin论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
