Iconicity is the study of the similarity or natural relationship between linguistic form(sign, signifier) or structure and the concept (referent/meaning, signified) or conceptstructure it represents (Li Wenfang, 2007). Diagrammatic iconicity, as the focus oficonicity, refers to the mapping relationship between the components of language interiorstructure and the ingredients of human beings’ cognitive structure (He Yongguo, 2004).Morpheme diagrammatic iconicity refers to the meaning mapping relationship betweenmorphemes and words. We will introduce the research background of the study, thesignificance and motivation of the study. And the organization of the paper is alsoincluded in this section.Research background of the studyLanguage plays a central role in distinguishing humans from other animals.Everything has to be endowed with a name and to be presented verbally for theconvenience of expression and communication. In this sense, language is usually definedas a system of signs which humans apply to convey countless complicated information.Through their long ontogenic and physical history of viable structural coupling inlinguistic practices, humans are thoroughly language-constituted beings (Foley 24).According to Peirce’s trichotomy of signs, they are including icon, index and symbol. Andicons are further divided into three subtypes: imagic iconicity, diagrammatic iconicity andmetaphor iconicity. The differences can be distinguished like this: if someone give you apicture of apple, you associates with apple, this called imagic icon; if someone give youthe letters apple, you associates with apple, this is called diagrammatic iconicity; ifsomeone give you the peal of apple or other things, and you associates with apple this iscalled metaphor icon. The following table is the classification of sigh in detail to analyze language phenomenon from different language iconicity. Iconicity of linguisticsigns refers to the natural relationship of linguistic signs between the expressing side andits corresponding content. In recent years, more and more scholars pay much attention toiconicity study in linguistic field. They mainly touch iconicity at lexical level, andsyntactical level, and have combined the iconicity study with applied linguistics andliteracy criticism and other fields.We made a generation of previous study in lexical iconicity study (see the followingtable). They are mainly from the angle of imagic and diagrammatic iconicity to elaboratelexical iconicityiconImagic iconicity Phonology, pictographic iconicityDiagrammatic iconicity Order, etymology, morphemes iconicityIn this study, morphemes iconicity is our major concern which lies in themorphological structure of the word. That is, the meaning of a word can be inferred fromthe meaning of the component of morphemes. And there are eight types of morphemesiconicity by means of word formation, including compounding, derivation, clipping,abbreviation, back-formation, conversion, blending and reduplication, and in this study, bythe means of derivation is the major concern. This category of iconicity lies in derivationalwords. In derivational words, morphemes iconicity is concerned with two aspects: themeanings and the function of each constitutive and the relation between them.Derivational words can effectively reflect the iconic relationship between roots and affixesand their words.
