Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Present Research

With the development of theory of language transfer, more importance is being attachedto the influence of Chinese on non-major students' English writings. The study of languagetransfer will bring great,realistic significance to foreign language teaching in China. Theinfluence of Chinese language is more obvious than some other languages due to thefollowing three reasons: the great difference between the eastern and western cultures andthoughts; the language distance between Chinese and English resulting from quite differentlanguage families where they stay; the status of English as a foreign rather than a secondlanguage in China. Therefore, foreign language teaching theory and methodology should beexplored with Chinese features on the basis of Chinese teaching situation and conditions,andlanguage transfer can serve as one of the ways to cross the threshold. English,a secondlanguage for most of the people in the world,has increasingly become the internationallanguage for business and commerce, science and technology,international relation,anddiplomacy. Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is a complex process involving manyinterrelated factors. SLA is the product of many factors pertaining to the learners on the onehand and the learning situation on the other (Ellis,1999). Over the past sixty years or so,studies of second language learning have occupied a central place in the area of appliedlinguistics (AL).
The role of one's mother tongue in second language learning has long been acontroversial issue. However,mother tongue influences can be easily traced in all aspects ofsecond language learners' interlanguage. The similarities and differences between the learner'smother tongue and the target language may lead to positive and negative transfer in learning asecond language. Language transfer has been a central issue in applied linguistics,secondlanguage acquisition,and language teaching for at least a century (Odlin,2008).


1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research


1.2.1 The Purpose of the Research
During my sixteen years of college English teaching, I'm interested in accumulating andanalyzing the students' exercises in class and their assignments. By analyzing the students'assignments,the author found many problems in their writing. "Chinglish" expressions can be found in almost every piece of writing. Besides, linguistic errors such as morphologicalmarkers of plurality, genitive, third-person, singular, verb tense,mood,spelling mistakes etc.are also common errors in the writings. It seems that what the students lack most seriously inwriting is not the systematic writing skill but the most basic sentence writing ability (Qiu,2006). Wang Yatong (2000) forther proved this in his “The Comparative Study on theComposition Models of Chinese and American College Students' Writings".
