Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background and Rationale of the Study
As a wide and multinational country, China has witnessed a large number of dialects dueto geological differences and habitats. These dialects are one of the most important treasuresfor both China and the world. Hangzhou，as the capital city of Zhejiang Province, is famousfor its long history and continued prosperity. Due to the important geological and politicalposition of Hangzhou, Hangzhou dialect (HZD) has been an important dialect for the localpeople. Hangzhou English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' language accuracyproblems have been longstanding in Hangzhou. Since there are many more differences thansimilarities between Hangzhou dialect and English in terms of phonetic system，a negativetransfer exists in Hangzhou EFL learners (Miao, 2012). Therefore, it is necessary to get intothis perspective further in order to research into more specific details in terms of the influenceof Hangzhou dialect on Hangzhou EFL learners' acquisition so that Hangzhou EFL learnersand foreign language teachers can have clearer directions in terms of English acquisition andEnglish teaching.The author joined in CASSAESOP' which aims to establish a huge data base withrecording materials on EFL learners' English and their dialects. In charge of picking upparticipants and recording, the author of this thesis is chosen to assist in recording relativematerials in Hangzhou，including English, Mandarin Chinese and Hangzhou dialect.

1.2 Purpose and Research Questions of the Study
This essay aims to find out the relationship between Hangzhou dialect and the acquisitionof English initial consonant clusters through an empirical method. In this essay，theperspective is decided on the two-element initial consonant clusters ending with phone,which is the research aim. The detailed research of the influence is the purpose of this study.Therefore, the questions of this study include the following ones;
1. Which initial consonant clusters do Hangzhou EFL learners have the most difficulties interms of acquisition?
2. What are the problematic initial consonant clusters like in the production?
3. What is the influence of Hangzhou dialect on the production of these initial consonantclusters?
4. What are the main causes for the difficulties of Hangzhou EFL learners' acquisition ofinitial consonant clusters?

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Similarity Differential Rate Hypothesis
After Contrastive Analysis (CA) was called into question because it could not predictareas of difficulty, it was modified into the so-called moderate version, claiming that similarphenomena are more difficult to acquire than dissimilar phenomena (Oiler & Ziahosseiny，1970).
