ting research categories, content analysis makes the researchmaterials controllable, and gets the common characteristics reflected from thesecategories. But it neglects the characteristics of news discourse as a text, such as itsstructure and context, which are also vital for news discourse. Against thisbackground, Van Dijk’s approach of applying discourse analysis to news will be usedto make case studies. Case studies are aimed to study news as a kind of discourse inorder to supply more detailed descriptions about the research materials.

4.1 An Introduction of the Four Cases
Since the discourse analysis is more complex and it is impossible to study all thereports like content analysis does, typical cases will be selected to be studied. Thoughthese cases are small in number, they are typical topics so that they can represent mostof the reports and reflect their common characteristics.In order to echo with the theme of this study, according to the classification ofnational interest, four pieces of news will be selected to represent the four categoriesof national interest.

CONCLUSIONS

This chapter makes conclusions about the whole research. It will review whathave been done in this research. Research findings of this research will be present asthe answers of the questions brought up at the beginning of this paper. Implicationsand limitations of this study will also be discussed.The rapid development of China is getting more and more attentions from theworld, while China’s future development needs communication with the world. Mediaopens a window for people to learn about China as well as for Chinese to find outhow they are described. A lot of researches have studied the China’s national imagedescribed by western media. However, national image is only a superficial problem,while national interest is the root.This study by using content analysis and Van Dijk’s discourse analysis asresearch methods, has researched all the reports relative to China in 2013 on thewebsite of Time. By analyzing the 225 samples, the characteristics of Chinaconstructed by the research materials have been got, and China’ s picture described bythe reports on the website of Time can be outlined. It can be divided into two parts:international affairs and internal affairs.
