CHAPTERⅠINTRODUCTION

1.1 Research Background
News provides a channel through which people can get social, political andeconomical knowledge, and it can also shape people’s values and beliefs about theworld potentially. Except our daily conversation, there exists no other discursivepractice that can compete with news reports on the dimension of participants’ number, including viewers, readers and listeners. Therefore, it is no wonder that news reportshave got so much attention from mass communication researchers, linguists anddiscourse analysts. With the stable and quick development in recent years, China plays a more andmore important role in the world. The more impact a nation has, the more attention itwill get. China’s peaceful rise has shocked the world, and this makes it become thefocus of many famous Media. Famous journals in America like Time, Newsweek andForeign Affairs have special reports about China. For example, Time once had acoverage story named Dawn of a new dynasty in 2007. These journals’ coveragesabout China show their sensitivity about the world, and they provide a chance to theworld to recognize China. However, everything has two sides. As Van Dijk (1988) once pointed out, “mediaare not a neutral, common-sensed, or rational mediator of social events, butessentially help reproduce preformulated ideologies”( p. 12). Though objectiveness isalways the first pursuit of news reports, news reports to some extent are the results ofa series of factors’ interactions which may influence the objectiveness of news.Theseremind researchers and readers that news reports are not so simple as they appear, andthese are also the right reasons causing so many scholars pay their attention to newsdiscourse analysis.

1.2 Research Purposes
With the quick and stable development in economy, China has gradually gotmore and more chances to appear on international media. This should be a goodopportunity for China to be learned about by the world. However, as many researcheshave illustrated, news reports are influenced by many factors so that they may reportChina in a way that is not good for the publicity of China. This point has been verifiedby many scholars. News reports are the consequence of many influences including anews organization’s market (Lacy, 1992) or its targets, its resources available forstaffing (Fico & Drager, 2001), news sources’ conscious or unconscious leak ofinformation and reporters’ judgments on the information (Westley & MacLean, 1957),and reporters’ choices about style, structure and language. In addition, mediacompanies’ different ownership, management, and operating will also influence theirreports; news organizations in different competitive situations allocate content differently (Lacy, 1987). This is a long list, but there are still other potential factorsthat have not been mentioned here.Besides, though many researches have been done on the reports relative to Chinain foreign media, like Research on the China-related reports in the New York Timesand the Washington Post (Shao Jing, 2011), and A critical discourse analysis onChina’s image in the main media of the USA: a case study of the editorials of the NewYork Times about the Beijing olympics (Lu Cong, 2009), most of them are done fromthe perspective of national image, and researches from the perspective of nationalinterest are few. However, national image is just the result that many论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
