1.1Background of
literature review
As China has boasted the most populous English learners around the world, moreand more people are concerned about the unbalanced development of communicativecompetence among English learners. Generally, people tend to regard thatcommunicative competence is the first and foremost aspect which can reveal thelanguage ability of a language learner. A great deal of effort is put into the Englisheducation to cultivate students with high communicative competence for helpingboost China’s economy. Thus, a great amount of foreign teachers are employed withhigh salaries to teach oral English, especially for students of English major in higherinstitutions.To many foreign teachers’ dismay, the accustomed communicative languageteaching (CLT) approach for them in their own countries is usually faced with adifficult time. Students either feel seemingly reluctant to participate in theirelaborately prepared class activities or even get into occasionally reticence. Thoughsometimes students do join in the class activities, many of them are more likely tospeak Chinese instead of English. Many of their discussions in English wither away afew minutes before it can be fully covered despite repeatedly encouragement fromtheir teachers. All these phenomena puzzle their teachers and put them into frustration.While a small amount of students in each class could always be depended on by theirteachers to get out of embarrassment. Those students always actively take part indiscussions in English and always craze for answering questions proposed by theirteachers. They grasp every possible opportunity to speak out their opinion in English.

1.2 Purpose of the Study
The study is undertaken to find out the reasons why those small amount ofstudents hold positive attitude and embrace CLT. That is, what contributes to theirbehavioral differences towards the same class? The primary research questions thewriter tries to figure out are: what factors contribute to students’ positive attitudetowards CLT and how do these factors contribute to students’positive attitude towardsCLT?In order to figure out the above mentioned questions, 26 freshmen specialized inEnglish from two colleges are selected to be the research subjects from approximately300 students. The ultimate goal of the study is to establish a grounded theory toanswer my exploring questions through class observation and intensive interview.

Chapter Two Literature Review
According to Wen (2012), a literature review demonstrates the conceptualunderstanding of the research topic and his/ her ability to argue for the need of thestudy. This is the best place to see whether the researcher has acquired the macro-levelorganizing ability to put the relevant materials together to develop an argument.Charmaz (2006) sees the literature review as essential in giving the researcher’sposition validity, and adding strength to the study. She points out that the literaturereview demonstrates where the researcher’s work fits within the existing body ofwork, or extends it in some way. More importantly, the literature review, saysCharmaz (2006), lays the foundation for the author’s discussion, and sets up what willbe done in the chapters that follow.
