t study and suggestionsfor future study.In this thesis, our topic is about verbal impoliteness in the analysis of impolitephenomena in Fortress Besieged. First of all, we make a relevant literature review onthe domestic study of Fortress Besieged and the study on impoliteness both at homeand abroad, pointing out that although impoliteness is a new research interest in thepragmatic field, yet, it is developing rapidly and new systematic models and theorieshave come into being. Then we give a detailed introduction to Spencer-Oatey’s rapportmanagement theory and a brief introduction to Culpeper’s model of impoliteness.Rapport management theory is a relatively new theory. It’s tentative to take this theoryas its theoretical framework in pragmatically interpreting the use of impoliteness.Despite the fact that this theory was put forward by a western scholar, it turns outthat the verbal impoliteness in Fortress Besieged can be analyzed with rapportmanagement theory at its theoretical foundation. Since the theory is about harmony ordisharmony in interactions, and verbal impoliteness impairs the harmoniousrelationship between the communicators, we can apply this theory to analyzing verbalimpoliteness. To put it differently, rapport management theory is a valid way to analyzeverbal impoliteness emerging in Chinese literary work.
