Chapter Ⅵ Conclusion

6.1 Major Findings of the Research

This thesis takes the The IT Crowd as the research subject to analyze the Britishverbal humor in sitcoms by employing the CBT. Both quantitative and qualitativeapproaches are adopted in the process of research. Three findings are listed as follows, which is corresponding to the three research questions.

Firstly, the distribution proportion of the British verbal humor in The IT Crowdunder the CBN is that double-scope network accounts for the highest proportionfollowed by mirror network, single-scope network and simplex network. So the Britishverbal humor belonging to double-scope network and mirror network are the mostcommon and widespread in The IT Crowd. Satire accounts for the highest proportion ofthe four British humor features. What’s more, compared with the other three networks, satire accounts for the most in the mirror network. Absurdity ranks second and appearsmost frequently in the double-scope network. Irony and self-mockery account for arelatively small proportion of the total. Accordingly, satire and absurdity are the mostwidely used ways to show the unique British cold humor because satire in the mirrornetwork and absurdity in the double-scope network appear most frequently. Therefore, the data also demonstrates that satire and absurdity are the most prominent features ofBritish humor in The IT Crowd.

Secondly, in the view of Fauconnier (1997), CBT reveals the dynamic process ofmeaning construction and explains the generation mechanism of language meaning.Achieving the humorous effect of the British verbal humor means completing thedynamic meaning construction of the humorous language. And the meaning construction of the British verbal humor should go through three steps of conceptualintegration process, namely composition, completion and elaboration, to achieve itshumorous effect. The Conceptual Blending Networks clearly show the dynamicmeaning construction process of different British cold humor, revealing the relevantcognitive operations of the recipients during the process of interpreting the Britishverbal humor, thus providing a theoretical basis for abstract cognitive activities.

Thirdly, according to Fauconnier (1998) and Coulson (2001), meaning constructionis a kind of cognitive activity operated in mental spaces which involves backgroundknowledge and contextual information to create a new structure that does not exists ininput spaces. The background knowledge participates in the construction of mentalspaces, the connection of mental spaces and the creation of the new conceptual meaningin the process of integrating mental spaces. Context is another indispensable factor, especially in sitcoms. Context can be divided into linguistic context, situational contextand cultural context (Hu, 1994).
