The first part of the thesis has discussed the relationship between human and nature thatappears in the novel, which can be further separated into the relationship between men andnature and that between women and nature. The farm scene depicted in the novel is nottranquil and beautiful but a refuge after Lurie’s scandals, a setting in which three black menrape a white woman to vent their historical hate and a place where animals no longer growunrestrained but are scarred. Such a scene of human destruction is no longer of natural beautybut full of wounds. Similarly, in such a harsh environment and patriarchal society, women’slives are also under threats. Lucy has to struggle on her own in order to live on the farm.Women’s marginalized and otherized position help them form an intimate relationship withnature.

Influenced by the thought of anthropocentrism, human beings are constantly developingand utilizing the nature and environment, which makes the existence of nature andenvironment threatened. Besides, under the influence of patriarchy, the status between menand women is also unequal. Therefore, the second part has mainly analyzed Lurie’s utilizationand invasion of the female body, the destruction of women’s identity and the suppression oftheir rights to speak in the novel.
