Warren argues that women are often described in animal terms, forinstance, “cows, foxes, chicks, serpents, old bats, pussy cats, bird-brains, hare-brains”, andshe also points out that “Nature is often raped, mastered, conquered, controlled and mined” (Warren, 2001: 110). For example, there are ideas that regard women as hens, who giggle, goto bachelor parties, are afraid of their husbands and, fear of ageing (old hens are no longersexually attractive or able to reproduce), and that regard women as social butterflies. MotherNature (not the father) is raped, mastered, controlled, conquered and minded; her secrets areinfiltrated, and her womb is thrown into the service for scientists. Or if the soil is fertile, thefallow land is useless or barren, like a woman who cannot conceive.

In his novel Disgrace, Coetzee also describes interactions that happen between humanand nature, including those who mercilessly destroy nature and kill animals. The image of a“farm” often represents tranquility and harmonious; in the novel, however, irreconcilableconflicts congest the farm. Such contrast is also reflected in Lucy’s experience: Lucy, ahardworking and independent white woman, always manages to live in harmony with theenvironment and the animals on the farm. Unfortunately, it is on this farm that she gets rapedby three black people and even has to marry a black helper named Petrus later on. At the sametime, the protagonist Lurie is at first at odds with the farm and with the animals. It is obviousin this novel that agriculture and farm no longer fit Wordsworth’s description, which shouldbe tranquil, beautiful, and a harmonious blend of self-spirit and the land. On the farm, Luriehelps Petrus, a black farmhand. And when Lurie first goes to Bev’s farm, he finds it not apeaceful and comfortable place but full of the stench. Working at Bev’s animal clinic, hecomes to realize that it is hard to return to his old life because he has to watch that animals aretreated cruelly, especially when Lucy is robbed and raped by three black men, but he just getsburnt.

2.2 The Harmonious Relationship between Nature and Women

Ecofeminism is a radical non-dualism theory that criticizes the ideas of binary oppositiontheories. Traditional binary opposition theorists divide nature from human beings.
