Conclusion

Carnivalization is not a literary genre or literary thought in a narrow sense,but it isinextricably linked with literary genres and literary thought.It can be regarded as abroader spiritual and cultural phenomenon,which can be traced back to an earlier period.This trend of intellectual rebellion already existed in the ancient Greek and Romanperiods and the Renaissance.

Touchstone in As You Like It is a clown full of carnivalization.This thesissummarizes three main manifestations of his carnivalized characteristics.At first,interms of language characteristics,Touchstone talks extensively and deeply with others.This dialogic nature is not only reflected in the clown’s independent thinking but alsoreflected in the relative independence of ideology among characters.Secondly,in termsof physical characteristics,the grotesque body of Touchstone the clown has uniquetopographic traces.As a carnivalized character,these topographic features aremanifested with the clown’s performance on stage and the clown’s inferior words.Thirdly,in the crowning and decrowning ceremonies in the Forest of Arden,Touchstonedares to challenge the authority,but he also surrenders to the authority,deeplyportraying the image of a carnivalized clown.In this carnivalized comedy,Touchstoneridicules the noble ladies’absurd enthusiasm and obsession in love with his quaintmarriage.He also laughs at the unrealistic fantasies of the nobles in the Forest of Ardenfor pastoral life.In addition,almost all of the characters in the play are ridiculed by hiscarnivalized words.
