st themselves, unwilling to accept or unable to accept the normal anxiety experience, neurotic anxiety will occur, affecting the level of mental health and the experience of sense of existence, thus hindering people's growth.(Yang,2011:172)

4.1.1 Psychological Depression: Premarital Anxiety

One of the root causes of anxiety is the loss of the ability to love. People often confuse love with sex and do not know how to establish relationships with others in the love way. (May,1967:698) Rollo May believes that sex is an anesthetic, which can temporarily relieve anxiety, but will eventually make people feel depressed. (Yang,2011:171) Premarital anxiety is the internal reflection of Marian lost herself, which is embodied in the following aspects.

First of all, Marian has never been respected in her sexual life with her fiancé Peter. It is recalled that Peter's friend got married unfortunately. The first time they had sex was on the sheepskin in Peter's bedroom. The second time, he drove for four hours on a thick blanket in the field. Marian could not help thinking of farmers and cows. Although she was very uncomfortable psychologically, she still tried to cater to Peter in order to make him happy. The latest time was because of the sudden marriage of Treg. Peter chose to have sex with Marian in the bathtub. Marian felt that Peter might just want to emphasize his youthful vitality. She thought that the friend’ marriage would remind Peter of the monotonous life after marriage, so he wanted to take sex as his expression of a rebellious mentality. Although Marian felt very uncomfortable, she did not object.

Chapter 5 Conclusions

The Edible Woman is the first full-length novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The novel tells the story of Marian, a heroine who awakens to her feminine consciousness gradually and achieves female independence more successfully in a situation where women become subordinate to men. Atwood uses light-hearted language and storyline to depict the plight of women, using the eating disorder to suggest a loveless marriage and the feeling of being consumed by an unfulfilling life. This thesis attempts to analyze the growth anxiety of Marian, based on the anxiety theory of Rollo May, the father of American existential psychology, and to study the process of how Marian gets rid of her anxiety and reinvents herself. The main body of the thesis consists of two main sections, which analyze the causes of Marian's anxiety and the means by which she overcomes her anxiety and reinvents her sense of feminine self and temperament, in parallel to both normal and neurotic anxiety.

Rollo May suggests that anxiety is a concern that arises from the threat to the individual's personality and the fundamental values of existence. There are two main causes of anxiety, the fragmentation of values in modern society and psychological emptiness and isolation. May classifies anxiety into two categories, including normal anxiety and neurotic anxiety, based on the reactions of individuals experiencing anxiety. He believes that anxiety as a feature of human existence cannot be avoided by everyone as they grow up. Normal anxiety is a reaction that is balanced against threat and can often be faced with the right attitude, using constructive methods to eliminate it.
