t only the texts that critics study but also the texts that we draw upon for our research are culturally specific and socially embedded content. In other words, all texts are the product of a specific culture, history, politics, economy, and system, and are historical in nature. New Historicists advocate the integration of the study of texts and cultural contexts, which understands both the social presence in the text and the social presence reflected in the text, rather than treating history as the context of the text. By excavating Díaz‟s identity as a Dominican-American author and his experiences growing up, as well as his critique of the dictatorship, this section analyzes the external factors which influence the writing of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.

2.2.1 Reflections on Diaspora Identity

Dispersion literature can be traced back to The Bible-Old Testament, where the Hebrews migrated to various parts of Canaan and Egypt. In the 19th century, as a result of the French Revolution and the unrest in various countries, many exiled writers engaged in diaspora literature abroad. Before and after the two world wars, colonialism expanded and colonial education instilled the language, culture and history of the suzerain state into the colonized people. The colonized people were not willing to be in a subordinate or marginal position, and they tried to resist the suppression and erosion of the mainstream culture in their literary creation, to recreate and reconstruct themselves, and to squeeze into the mainstream cultural center, only to find that they could neither give up their own cultural traits nor enter the mainstream cultural center. Nowadays, in the post-colonial context and globalization, a great number of immigrants, including the descendants of previous immigrants, constitute a global “rootless race”, and they have become the subject of diaspora literary works.

Chapter Four Subversion and Containment in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

4.1 Subversion to Ruling Ideology

According to New Historicism, “subversion” is to question or rebel against the social ideology that represents the traditional order, to give vent to the discontent of the individual or the unjustly treated party, and thus to achieve a rebellion against the old order. New historicism focuses on the rebellion and “subversion” of the ruling ideology, such as the rebellion against patriarchal oppression, totalitarian rule, and the social 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
