In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Díaz describes a patriarchal society in which there is a disparity in the status of men and women, and in which military violence and sexual violence are celebrated. In the dominant discourse of domination, Dominican women are subjugated and defenseless by a patriarchal society, while marginalized men face discrimination and repression by the tradition of masculinity in Latin American ethnic cultures. They are oppressed and persecuted by the social system and lose their political power and voice. However, power and resistance coexist in a system where the presence of power makes resistance essential for the oppressed.

Conclusion

Junot Díaz, one of the contemporary Dominican-American writers, draws on his own experiences to explore issues of male supremacy, white supremacy, and class discrimination in mainstream ideology through the lens of gender, race, class, and their interrelationships. In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Díaz tells the story of the marginalized people at the bottom of the Dominican hierarchy, whose existence reflects the plight of the marginalized groups in reality on the one hand, and implies the author‟s concern and deep thoughts about the future development of the Dominican nation as a whole on the other. Therefore, from the theme of literary creation, in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, the author not only inherits the literary tradition of Latin American writers writing about history but also gives unlimited attention and humanistic feelings to the marginalized people in reality. 

Through the analysis of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, this thesis draws the following conclusions:

Firstly, from the aspect of the historicity of the text, New Historicism holds that texts are products of their social environment and are necessarily influenced by the culture, society, and history of the time as well as the personal experience of the writer. In the writing of Díaz‟s texts, the concern for reality can be said to be the important landing point of his creations, and Latin America can be seen in almost all of his several works. In his work, Díaz exposes the worship and subservience to authority as one of the major ills of traditional Dominican culture, which provides a breeding ground for dictatorship to flourish, and sharply criticizes the Dominican dictatorship. As one of the major works of the “anti-dictatorship” movement, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao expresses Díaz‟s deep national sentiments in both its characters and themes. Taking objective historical facts as a starting point and adding some creative imagery, Díaz recreates for the reader the history of the dictatorship of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.
