pective of the number of syllables, English is divided into monosyllabic words, disyllabic words and polysyllabic words. Since monosyllabic words have only one syllable, there aren’t other unstressed syllables to be compared with. Therefore, monosyllabic words are not considered in this paper. 

Gui (1985: 144) listed four forms of disyllabic words rules in which the last one belongs to the rules of compound words that we will introduce in the following sections. Thus, only three rules will be discussed here. First is stress the first syllable, for example, Nation, People, Study etc. Second is stress the second syllable, including aFFAIR, beGAIN, beLOW etc. Third is stress two syllables, like inside, outside, uphill and so on. Zhang (2007: 96) argued that disyllabic word stresses the first syllable in most cases, like ENGlish, LEARner, TRAffic, etc. But most disyllabic verbs stress the second syllable, for instance, beLIEVE, deSIGN, etc.

4.1 Results of the Paper Test 

4.1.1 General Analysis of Paper Test on Subjects’ Errors

The paper test is used to investigate whether subjects can perceive the word stress correctly, or to say, to test whether they have the concept of English word stress in their mind. 

Thirty participants took part in the paper test. The paper test is divided into three parts. The first part is 24 English words, including disyllabic words, polysyllabic words, and words with affixes. Subjects are asked to underline the main stress of each word.    Homographs are tested within sentences in the second part. Part three is multiple choice.  This part is used to verify subjects’ understanding of compounds. There are 31 words in the paper and each word is one point. Thus, there are 31 points in total. Here is the result of the paper test by using SPSS 26.0.

5.1 Major Findings

This paper aims to study the errors in English word stress assignments of postgraduate students. 30 non-English postgraduate students at Yanbian University joined in the reading and paper tests. Three questions are put forward, and they are answered using two tests. The following are the major findings of the study.
