In category theory,in addition to prototype theory,the basic-level category isalso considered as the focal theory to analyze linguistic phenomena.As mentionedearlier,the prototype theory is one or several members of a particular category that arealways very typical and can be considered as representatives of that category.Generally speaking,the prototype category is a horizontal category while a typicalmember is a typical representative of all members in the same category.In contrast tothe prototype theory category,the basic-level category is a vertical category.In thepractice of understanding the objective world,one always classifies the new thingsthat one perceives and places them in the categories that they already accumulated.And it is constantly enriched through practice.According to the Rosch and hercolleagues’research,for human categorization,categorization at the basic-level is themost important.This is because this level has the greatest encompassing propertiesand the greatest amount of information.In the human conceptual hierarchy,the mostimportant thing is not the higher-level categories such as“animal”and“furniture”,nor the lower-level categories such as“Persian cat”and“armchair”,but“cat”and“chair”in the middle of the category.Such cognitive laws exist not only in the nouns,but also in verbs.
