Cases of COVID-19 were first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan City,Hubei Province,China.It was also the first city to launch an infectious diseaseemergency mechanism,featuring quick citywide lockdown and makeshift hospitals.Later,the World Health Organization(WHO)declared the COVID-19 outbreak as aPublic Health Emergencies of International Concern(PHEIC).The rapid andpowerful spread of the COVID-19 has led to a rapid increase in the number ofconfirmed cases worldwide.Meanwhile,as the people’s window to current events,the media,has certainly attracted much attention,and the ensuing anti-epidemicdiscourse has become an important basis for the people to understand the development of events,to keep abreast of current affairs,and to understand nationalpolicies and instructions.

The literature search with COVID-19 as the keyword reveals that the researchon it is mainly concentrated on medicine,social governance and journalism andcommunication.To be specific,related linguistic studies mainly focus on discourseconstruction,discourse dissemination and discourse analysis.However,the analysisof the subjectivity of Chinese anti-epidemic discourse has not been given muchattention,much less has it been explored from the perspective of modality.Therefore,this thesis will attempt to enrich the study of Chinese anti-epidemic discourse,modality and linguistic subjectivity,in order to add to this research gap.

1.2 Research objectives and significance

In the current background of the epidemic,the anti-epidemic discourse runsthrough people’s daily life,and they are always paying attention to and using theanti-epidemic discourse.The anti-epidemic discourse conveys the basic informationabout the epidemic to people,guides people to view the COVID-19 correctly,andalso relieves people’s pain and suffering caused by the epidemic,and guides peopleto cooperate with the requirements and measures taken by the government for theprevention and control of the epidemic.The subjectivity of language is the mostimportant aspect of speech.The subjectivity of language,as the most essentialproperty of discourse,is ubiquitous and plays an important role in guiding people’s understanding of information,influencing their judgment,perception and emotionaldisposition toward the content of information.
