Chapter One  Introduction

1.1 Background of the research

With the overall advancement of reform and opening up, China has made an upgrade in its global status and influence. The international community, therefore, shows a growing interest in China’s model of development, which can usually be found in political materials including reports on government work, leaders’ speeches, news reports, etc. And as the proposition of political ideas and views featured by Chinese characteristics, Chinese political terms that can demonstrate the country’s policy, philosophy, idea and so on play a crucial role in the course of “going global”. 

Eco-translatology, a study on translations from the perspective of ecology, believes that translators and translations form part of a larger system of interdependencies that can be investigated in terms of an eco-system. This means the entire “translation chain” as well as its interaction with environment are taken into account. Inspired by Confucianism and ancient Chinese notions of harmony between human beings and the environment they live in, eco-translatology analogizes the natural ecosystem and the translational ecosystem. In the framework of eco-translatology, translational activities are perceived as a process of optimal adaptation and selection on the basis of Charles Darwin’s principle of the “survival of the fittest” (Tan, 2022, p. 312) and contemporary awareness of the importance of our natural environment, so that the “harmony” between different factors can be reached, which also corresponds to what President Xi has always called for. Thus, this theory can be used to analyze the English translation of Chinese political words in relevant documents.  

1.2 Purpose and significance of the research

Since the 19th CPC National Congress, Xi Jinping has put forward many original ideas drawn from his own experiences, and launched many initiatives for creating a global common good. Xi Jinping: The Governance of China III is one of the monographs assembling President Xi’s ideas and theories, so there are lots of Chinese political terms involved in this work. The purpose of this research is to explore the translation method and technique reflected in the translation of such terms in the three-dimensional transformation of eco-translatology, as well as the effect the target language realizes on the basis of the translator’s adaptation to the translational eco-environment. 

As for the significance of the research, it can be talked about from two aspects: theoretically, the research is meant to probe into eco-translatology and test its applicability in translation; practically, the research attempts to provide some references for the translation of Chinese political terms through detailed case analysis and to stimulate more relevant studies.

2.1 Definition and features of Chinese political terms

Speaking of Chinese political terms, scholars have defined them differently and there is no fixed definition.
