Chapter 2 Theoretical Framework

2.1 The Evolving of Anxiety Theory

Anxiety has a long history and is attracting more and more attention over the past century.'Anxiety'derived from the Latin word'Anxietas',refers to the relief after confessing to Godand obtaining forgiveness.Nowadays, anxiety is defined as an unpleasant and complex stateof tension. When a person is faced with a situation that may cause danger or threat,he willfeel uneasy or annoyed.People have an alert attitude towards danger, accompanied byhelplessness, unease, nervousness and other psychological states. In ancient Greek literatureand philosophy, people treated anxiety with stoicism and described it as a good omen whichwould only appear in the noble men,so they were usually willing to accept it.In the MiddleAges, anxiety was perceived as an inappropriate emotion out of the Catholic context.Peopletended to regard anxiety as an emotion which usually occurred when people disagreed withothers. It was not until the Renaissance that people believed that rationality should be aneffective weapon to control and defeat anxiety.Rationalists at that time insisted the belief thatnature or irrational emotions should be controlled by reason. In the late 19th century and early20th century, with the influence of capitalism and social unrest, the standard and self-controlof the middle class have collapsed, and the new social structure have not yet formed.Underthis situation, everyone was in danger and anxiety has frequently arisen in people's daily life.

2.2 Anxiety Theory of Rollo May

Rollo May elaborates on the details of anxiety theory in The Meaning of Anxiety. The book was published in 1950,which absorbs the anxiety theories of existential philosopherSoren Kierkegaard and Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis.Based on May's ownclinical practice of psychotherapy,he expounds the roots of anxiety and puts forward thereasonable ways to tackle anxiety.

2.2.1 Definition and Manifestations of Anxiety

In May's anxiety theory, anxiety is'the apprehension cued off by a threat to some valuethat the individual holds essential to his existence as a personality'(May,2015:232).Itmeans that anxiety is a sign of our inner conflict, and it is an apprehension in a state ofdiffusion. He also holds that anxiety is the human being's basic reaction to danger,or to somevalue he identifies with his existence. The threat may be to physical life,or it may be topsychological existence.Or'the threat maybe to some other value, such as freedom, patriotism and the love of another person'(May,2015:232).For human beings, such threat ofdeath and loss of core values mean the dissolution of his existence.
