1.     Comedy of Manners: Sheridan’s The School for Scandal
Drama is the specific mode of fiction represented in performance. The enactment of drama in theatre, performed by actors on a stage before an audience, presupposes collaborative modes of production and a collective form of reception. The structure of dramatic texts, unlike other forms of literature, is directly influenced by this collaborative production and collective reception. In the 18th century of England, the representative drama is Sheridan’s The School for Scandal.

Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751 –1816) was an Irish playwright and Whig statesman. His most famous play The School for Scandal is considered one of the greatest comedies of manners in English.
The School for Scandal is a comedy of manners. With principal themes of the deceptive nature of appearances, the fickleness of reputation, the often disreputable guises behind which goodness and honesty can conceal itself, it has been noted that “The play remains to this day a crowd-pleaser and one of the standard repertory pieces in our dramatic literature.” In it, the author contrasts two brothers, Joseph Surface and Charles Surface. In the play, Sheridan criticizes English upper society for its vanity, greed and hypocrisy. This play has been a great success on the stage and regarded as the best English comedy since Shakespeare.

In the eighteenth century British society has undergone dramatic and profound change. In 1688 the Glorious Revolution completely consolidated the British bourgeoisie in the social and political status.
