Native Americans, captives, and mutineers before being rescued. This device, presenting an account of supposedly factual events, is known as a "false document" and gives a realistic frame story.
The story was likely influenced by the real life Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived four years on the Pacific island called "Más a Tierra" (in 1966 its name was changed to Robinson Crusoe Island), Chile. It is also likely that Defoe was inspired by the Latin or English translations of Ibn Tufail's Hayy ibn Yaqdhan, an earlier novel also set on a desert island. Another source for Defoe's novel may have been Robert Knox's account of his abduction by the King of Ceylon in 1659 in An Historical Account of the Island Ceylon. The book proved so popular that the names of the two main protagonists have entered the language. The term “Robinson Crusoe” is virtually synonymous with the word “castaway” and is often used as a metaphor for being rejected. Robinson Crusoe usually referred to his servant as “my man Friday”, from which the term “Man Friday” (or “Girl Friday”) originated, referring to a dedicated personal assistant, servant, or companion. The success of the book spawned many imitators, and castaway novels became quite popular in Europe in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Jonathan Swift has been introduced before, so we will look into his novel Gulliver’s Travels directly. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. The book became tremendously popular as soon as it was published. Since then, it has never been out of print. The book presents itself as a simple traveler’s narrative with the disingenuous title Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World; its authorship assigned only to Lemuel Gulliver, first a surgeon, then a captain of several ships. Different editions contain different versions of the prefatory material which are basically the same as forewords in modern books.
The two novels represent the courage of the 18th century English; they researched the unknown world ceaselessly, and were brave to exploit it.
2. Sentimentalism: Sterne’s The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy , Gentleman and Goldsmith’s The Vicar of Wakefield
In the 18th century English novels, sentimentalism’s representative works include Sterne’s The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy , Gentleman and Goldsmith’s The Vicar of Wakefield.
