摘要:The description of the black community in The Bluest Eye, displays some external factors from the side of view, such as how the blacks are victimized in the white society, how the white cultural impacts get to influence the black family and community, and so on.
he hates any element of funk, and she rigidly maintains her prissy home. She builds her nest stick by stick, makes it her own inviolable world, and stands guard over its every plant, weed, and doily, even against her husband. In silence, she will return the lamp to where she put it in the first place; remove the dishes from the table as soon as the last bite is taken; wipe the doorknob after a greasy hand has touched it. She does not permit her son Junior to play with niggers. She draws a line between colored people and niggers. “Colored people were neat and quiet; niggers were dirty and loud. Junior belonged to the former group”. (Morrison, 2000: 71) He wears white shirts and blue trousers; his hair is cut as close to his scalp as possible to avoid any suggestion of wool, the part is etched into his hair by the barber. In winter his mother puts Jergens Lotion on his face to keep the skin from becoming ashen. Even though he is light-skinned, it is possible to ash. “The line between colored and nigger was not always clear; subtle and telltale signs threatened to erode it, and the watch had to be constant”. (Morrison, 2000: 71)
Though The Bluest Eye condemns racism, it does not present the problem as limited to white people. Much of the damage inflicted on Pecola comes from African American community which has internalized racist standards. The community as a whole shares the racist oppressions; it senses the Breedloves’ self-hatred and encourages it by agreeing that the Breedloves are ugly. It is the black community’s internalization of white racist standards seduces Pecola, the most vulnerable member in a marginal group, to the acceptance of those oppressive ideologies and eventually forces her to find refuge in madness in search of selfhood and feelings of worthiness.
Obviously Pauline and Pecola play the role of victim, but at the end of the story, the sacrifice can not solve the problem. Community life still continues, it is still the same standard to measure by people. Therefore, I believe that: self-hatred and self-denial in their lives are the most devastating factor. Those who adhered to their cultural tradition could preserve their subjectivity and wholeness, so they could live through the sufferings in the white society by resisting the evil influences of white culture; however, those who have consciously or unconsciously abandoned their cultural heritage and cut off the ties with the black family and community will be doomed to get lost in the white society and caged in the pain of seeking themselves. According to analyze, Morrison points out that the definition of the aesthetic standards of whites is the embodiment of racist discourse. So the blacks should learn to appreciate the beauty in the black skin, which is the only way to set up the national self-respect and keep the national culture.
2.4 Constructive Discourse of the Black
The Bluest Eye exposes their psychological of self-contempt and self-hatred through self-denial discourse, the Breedloves’ self-denial has given readers the feeling of depressed, but Morrison once said that her works come from the pleasure of the hope, not the loss of disappointing, the constructive discourse in the novel let the readers find the hope.
In sharp contrast to Pecola who cuddles the images of blue-eyed and blond-haired girls that dominate her world, Claudia rejects them all and the model of socialization they represent. Claudi
