r style with her own beliefs. The Accord family had as acquaintances with some influential feminists such as Margaret Fuller, Elizabeth Peabody. Therefore, young Accord was naturally affected by the initiation of feminist movement and finally became a feminist.
3 Feminist Reform of the March Sisters
The independence of women is a major theme in the novel Little Women. They treat the poor life with optimism, and keep to be tough, self-respect, modest and individual. The March sisters try to have a different life, to make money by themselves, to develop their talent, and to pursuit for new marriage. They are feminist reformers.
3.1 Feminist Reform of Jo
Among the March sisters, Jo is the second daughter in the March family who behaves like a big brother. Undoubtedly, she impresses readers most among her sisters. She is the most optimistic, vivacious, tomboyish girl, likes to play games with her neighbour Laurie, and likes to go skating and riding horses. Her behavior is often most unladylike – she burns her dress while warming herself at the fire, spills things on her only gloves, and barely tolerates her cranky old Aunt March (Gregory & Anne, 2001: 59). Jo is not a traditional good girl, she does not have the same dream as Meg and Beth’s, whose are setting up a happy warming family when they grow up. She is full of feminist spirit, wants independence and self-reliance, and wants to have a writing career.
Jo loves writing and writing brings her great happiness and satisfaction (Li Heqing, 2007:75). As women writer are not common at that time, so she just regards writing as her hobby, and sometimes write some stories for fun. She usually sits on the old sofa, writing busily with her papers spread out upon a trunk before her (Alcott, 2010: 150). Writing is an important thing in her life, so once when Amy gets angry with her, destroys manuscript Jo is so fond of and has been working on for a while, Jo gets annoys and refuses to speak to Amy for a long time.
Jo likes writing as contributing can bring her both reputation and money, but during writing to make a better life, she nearly loses herself. But finally she finds her way and pursuits on keeping self-reliance and individual. When Jo is inNew York, she tries to earn money by contributing. The publisher adopts her story, but omits the passages and crumples and underscores the story she hardly knows. Though Jo was unhappy, but when the newspaperman says she can get a lot of money, Jo compromises to dollar. She even agrees to write short and spicy compensations to amuse the readers. With a friend’s help, Jo recognizes her mistake and realizes what a terrible thing it is when ignoring moral and losing one’s style. She gives up the quick way to earn money, and restarts her feministic writing life.
Jo is a typical feminist and operator, she is eager for the equality of men and women, and always makes options and decisions by herself. Her marriage is viewed as a feminist experiment that women can be strong and loving, they can decide their marriage and continue to work and create as men. Growing up with Laurie, Jo only regards him as her best friend. When she finds out that Laurie falls in love with her, she is confused and afraid, feels trouble to make Laurie unhappy, and tries to make Laurie realize it is a mistake
