  Abstract
    Since  the  mid-  Ic)7Os a number  of  studies  have  investigated  the  nature  and  frequency  of  corporate  social  re- sponsibility  disclosures,  their  patterns  and  trends,  and  their  general  relationships  to  corporate  size  and  pro- fitability. 
 This  study  seeks  to  extend  our  knowledge  of  the  relationship  between  a number  of  corporate characteristics  and  specific  types  of  social  responsibility  disclosures,  based  on  an  extensive  sample  of  U.S. corporate  annual  reports.  Corporate  size  and  industry  category  are  found  to  correlate  with  certain  types  of disclosures  while  the  existence  of  a  corporate  social  responsibility  committee  appears  to  correlate  with one  particular  type  of  disclosure.

   Introduction

   In  contrast  to  normative  approaches  to  the  study of  corporate  social  responsibility  disclosures characteristic  of  the  1960s  and  early  1970s  re- cent  years  have  witnessed  an  upsurge  in  empiri- cal  studies  of  reporting  practices.  Such  studies have  provided  insights  into  the  number  of  com- panies  disclosing  social  impact  information,  the subject  matter  included  in  those  disclosures,  the trend  in  overall  disclosure  over  time  and  the general  relationship  between  corporate  size, profitability  and  the  propensity  to  disclose  so cially  relevant  information. This  paper  extends  the  scope  of  existing  em- pirical  studies  in  seeking  to  move  beyond  the  in- vestigation  of  overall  corporate  disclosure,  and general  aggregate  relationships  between  disclo- sure  and  independent  corporate-related  vari- ables  To  that  end,  this  study  is  based  upon  a comprehensive  sample  of  134  U.S.  companies drawn  from  ten  different  industries  as  reported in Ernst  & Whinney’s  1978  survey  of  the  corpor- ate  social  responsibility  disclosures  present  in the  annual  reports  of  Fortune  500  companies.
