Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies on Text Interpretation

This part mainly reviews the definition of the text and text interpretation, as well as the previous domestic and international studies on text interpretation.

2.1.1 Definition of text

Many linguists define text as “discourse” as well. According to Harris (1952), text is a form of related speech. Halliday (1976) developed the concept of “discourse” as a systemic functional grammar concept in linguistics, arguing that discourse refers to any length, spoken or written form that creates a unified meaning. According to Cook (1989), discourse is a language with comprehensive meaning and function. Leech (1996) asserts that discourse is comprehensive linguistic material with multiple forms and functions. Briefly, foreign scholars define a text or discourse primarily from the standpoint of textual meaning. Oral or written content is acceptable so long as the language expresses complete semantics.

According to Huang (1988) in China, a text is typically a linguistic whole made up of consecutive sentences or paragraphs, and coherence and cohesion are the two fundamental characteristics of a text. Hu (1994) explains that a text is a language that conveys a complete meaning in a particular context and is not constrained by grammar. In this study, “text” refers to the instructional discourse or the discourse found in English textbooks. The English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education (2022 Edition) states that, as one of the six elements of English curriculum content, the text carries language knowledge and cultural knowledge, expresses the theme, provides students with a variety of stylistic materials, and forms the content foundation of core literacy development, along with such elements as theme, language knowledge, cultural knowledge, language skills, and learning strategies. 

2.2 Previous Studies on Cloud Community

This part mainly reviews the definition of the cloud community, as well as the previous domestic and international studies on it.

2.2.1 Definition of cloud community 

Cloud community, which is synonymous with “Virtual Professional Learning Community”, is a new teaching-research mode established in the information age. It overcomes time and geographical limitations, exchanges and shares networked teaching resources, optimizes teaching research in the school and enhances the quality of instruction (Jiao & Sang, 2009).

Hord (1997) was the first to propose the concept of teachers’ professional community, believing that teachers’ professional community is a team of managers and instructors with a shared vision, cooperation, and a commitment to ongoing professional development. Wen (2020, 2012, 2022) recommended accelerating the internationalization of Applied Linguistics in China, that it is necessary to use high technology to organize online communities and proposed the concept of “Virtual Professional Learning Community” and its advantages and disadvantages while comparing the three professional learning models of foreign language teachers in colleges and universities in China, after which she changed the term into “Cloud community”.
