摘要:本文是英语论文范文。由于在我国英语学习工作者英语语句记忆广度与处理歧义句方面的研究很少,本文通过一项眼动实验来研究两者之间的相关性。Therefore, the present study may not only help us know Chinese EFL learners’ mentalmechanism in ambiguous sentences processing, but also draw certain implications forthe further English learning and teaching.

Chapter 1 Introduction


This thesis reports an empirical study on Chinese EFL learners’ processing ofEnglish relative clauses with attachment ambiguity by means of eye movementexperiment. Ambiguity, in definition, refers to a word, phrase, or sentence with morethan one meaning. Lexical ambiguity and syntactical ambiguity are the two main typesof ambiguity. Sentences containing attachment ambiguity is one type of syntacticalambiguity. Take the following sentence as an example. We may understand this sentence either as “the servant was on the balcony, andwas killed by someone” or “the designer was on the balcony, and his servant was killedby someone”.Recency and Predicate Proximity are the two principles followed in readers’sentence processing of English relative clauses with attachment ambiguity. RecencyPrinciple is claimed to preferentially attach incoming lexical items to structures builtmore recently[1]. Predicate Proximity Principle holds that attachments are preferred to bestructurally as close as possible to the predicate phrase[1]. Previous studies[2-6]indicatethat native speakers prefer Recency Principle when they read relative clauses withattachment ambiguity. Some scholars[7-15]also pay attention to the attachmentpReference on second language learners, yet few of them focus on Chinese EFL learners’processing of English relative clauses with attachment ambiguity.
As an on-line measurement, eye movement experiment can detect readers’ readingbehavior dynamically. Therefore, it is a technical means to trace subjects’ eye fixationduration, regression duration and regressive counts, etc, which reveal readers’processing of English relative clauses with attachment ambiguity. Previous studies onforeign language learners’ sentence processing concentrate on the effect of lexical andsyntactic factors as well as the influence of their working memory span, yet littleattention is paid to subjects’ eye movements.Some foreign scholars[2, 8, 14, 15]study on foreign language learners’ processing of relative clauses with attachment ambiguity by means of eye movement experiment.Nevertheless, they only focus on Spanish, Russian, French, which belong toIndo-European language family like English. Since none of them focus on Chinese EFLlearners’ processing of relative clauses with attachment ambiguity, and English relativeclauses with attachment ambiguity are difficult in English learning and teaching.Therefore, the present study may not only help us know Chinese EFL learners’ mentalmechanism in ambiguous sentences processing, but also draw certain implications forthe further English learning and teaching. The thesis consists of six chapters. Following this introduction chapter, ChapterTwo introduces the definition and models of working memory, illustrates the eyemovement research and reviews the sentence processing strategies and previousachievements on sentence processing of English relative clause. Chapter Three mainlyfocus on the design of three experiments - working memory span test, off-linequestionnaire investigation and on-line eye movement experiment. Chapter Fourillustrates the results of this research. Chapter Five is a discussion part for the resultsand the conclusion part is Chapter Six.
