摘要:本文是大学英语论文,The purpose of the present research is to investigate the real use ofcohesive devices by analyzing a random sample of 80 expository compositionswritten by sophomore non-English majors in Shenyang normal University, onthe basis of the Cohesion Theory and Halliday and Hasan’s taxonomy ofcohesive devices, making an attempt to identify and quantify the cohesive errorsin their compositions.
Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
The aim of English teaching courses is controlly defined in terms of fourbasic skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The writing skill is oftenperceived by the learners as the most difficult and hard to master one among thefour. Writing is not merely a way of recording language by means of visiblemarks and instead it requires a higher level of productive language control thanspeaking. The written language is always required to be more accurate, moreappropriate, more explicit and more effective than spoken discourse. Manyresearchers believe that knowing how to write efficiently is among the mostimportant abilities that academically oriented language learners need to develop,because writing skills are essential to academic success and a requirement formany occupations and professions.In China, almost all English teachers and learners, especially in colleges,are aware of the importance of competent English writing and they spend muchtime and energy trying writing to improve English writing. In 2007, CET4 andCET6 tests undertook great changes have been to the top of the test paper fromthe bottom. Examinees are required to finish the writing task at the first 30minutes of the test. It’s a great challenge to many examinees; and to Englishteachers and researchers, it’s a sign of more importance lying on writing skillnow. But the present fact is that writing has still been extremely difficult forEnglish teachers to teach and for learners to acquire and that writing remains asthe weakest link among the four basic skills. Zeng Xiangjuan (2004) makes anassessment of the textuality of 200 CET 4 compositions from nine aspects oftextuality (cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity,situationality, dominant text theme, generic structure, and unity in content). Theassessment results manifest the less textuality of students’ CET 4 compositions.

1.2 The purpose and significance of the study
The purpose of the present research is to investigate the real use ofcohesive devices by analyzing a random sample of 80 expository compositionswritten by sophomore non-English majors in Shenyang normal University, onthe basis of the Cohesion Theory and Halliday and Hasan’s taxonomy ofcohesive devices, making an attempt to identify and quantify the cohesive errorsin their compositions.In the analysis of these compositions, the thesis focuses on the errorscommitted in using cohesive devices and tries to find something in generalabout those errors.It’s expected that the study might lead to a better understanding of therelationship between the use of cohesive devices and coherence of writing andfind out some effective ways of improving the coherence of students’ writing.The significance of the study lies in that since the study focuses on the realuse of cohesive devices and the errors committed in using the cohesive devices,the findings from the study show some practical value on the teaching ofEnglish writing. In future teaching of English writing, the English teacherscould design some exercises or conduct some activities to help their studentsovercome the obstacle and avoid making similar errors.
