2.1 Previous Studies on Ecologism
Ecologism emerged along with the evol ution of economy and technology in the 1970s. Ecologism is an integrated concept related to other disciplines like philosophy, psychology and literature. Initailly ecologi sm concern with environm ent protection, but later the ecologists try to explore the reasons whic h account for the ecological crisis in the light of soci al ideology and against cu ltural background. Emerging at a social level and gradu ally turning into a sc ientific concept, the ecologism have experienced three stages. The f ollowing part will p resent previous studies on the ecological views in a chronological order. The first stage is from the 1960s to the early 1970s. Ecologism emerged at this stage. Rachel Carson is the first on e in America to write with ecolog ical concern. Rachel Carson points out that abusing of pesticides and insecticides not only pollute the rivers, lakes, under ground waters, soils and forests, but also does harm to humean’s health. Carson declares that if pe sticides and insecticides are continued to be abused, the spring in the future will be a dead silen t one (Carson, 2003). As an environmentalist, Carson questions the goals and directions of society’s developement, and he suspects whether hum an are entitled to dom inate the earth (Sessions, 1995). The book Silient Spring caught people’s eyes and e nhanced people’s environmental awareness. As a declaration of m odern environmental protection, the book Silient Spring by Rachel Carson awakens human’s ecological consciousness.

2.2 Previous Studies on Gary Snyder’s Ecological Views
As one of the representatives of the ecological poets, Gary Snyder (1930—) is both a translator and Zenist. He is a lead er and pioneer in advocating environm ental protection in Am erica. This part presen ts the previous studies on G ary Snyder’s ecological views based on his ecological holism and his works. Gary Snyder has established an ecologi cal consciousness based on his globa l thinking. The previous researches have focused on the st udies of Snyder’s ecological holism in the following three aspects: S nyder’s life experience, his bioregional consciousness and his Buddhist ecological philosophy. Chung Ling points out that Snyder’s close relationship with nature is inseparable with his growing experience. T raditionally, under the influence of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, human are superior to nature and the latter is for human’s domination in the view of western civi lization. Chung Ling considers that Snyder holds a dif ferent view toward nature. He respects nature and advocates an equal coexistence between these two. Chung Li ng concludes that Snyder ’s childhood experience in nature of fered him a ki nd of rigorous initiation and religious transformation, which offers him a sound foundation for the formation of ecological view (Chung Ling, 2006).
