5.1    Linguistic context

In accordance with what Prof. Hu said in his book Discourse Cohesion and Coherence, linguistic  context  means  the  inner  environment  of  the  text [46].  Since  the  reader  is  not  the character  involved  in  the  text,  he  cannot  get  the  feeling  directly.  Because  of  different linguistic  constructions  in  different  languages,  translators  must  make  adaptations  to  help target  readers  understand  the  intention  of  the  writers  and  achieve  the  optimal  relevance between the source writer’s intention and the target readers’ cognitive environment.  

The  strategy  of  contextual  adaptation  in  linguistic  context  will  be  discussed  in  three levels: choices of words, explanation of words, and sentence structures.

5.1.1    Contextual Adaptation in Choice of Words

While  making choices  in the  meaning of a word, the  importance of context comes  into sight  compared  with  other  influencing  factors.  Indeed,  the  context  provides  more  meaning than the terms analyzed separately. Linguistic context not only determines how to understand words,  but  also  how  to  translate  words.  There  are  some  non-professional  words,  such  as nouns and verbs, which have different meanings in different linguistic contexts as follows.
