of relevance theory in the translation process.Itconsiders translation as a kind of communication that involves three parties,namely,the originalauthor,the translator,and the target audience.Ernst-August Gutt,who put forward this theory in hisdoctoral dissertation Translation and Relevance:Cognition and Context,noted that translation issupposed to achieve optimal relevance of the context.In this case,the target audience receivessufficient information without unnecessary effort.He believed that translation is an act ofcommunication rather than a text genre(Gutt,2000),and it thus followed the basic rule of verbalcommunication.

2.2 Literature Review

Gutt received much scholarly attention after his theory was introduced to China.Scholarsinterpreted relevance translation theory from various perspectives.The interpretation mainly fellinto three parts:theoretical introduction,theoretical construction,and its application.

One prominent representative is Lin Kenan(1994),who gave a clear-cut introduction to thebook Translation and Relevance:Cognition and Context and expounded on Gutt’s theoretical foundation,basic arguments,and three core ideas.He concluded that in order to achieve theoptimum contextual effect,translators must have a clear understanding of the readers’cognitiveenvironment and make sure that the least processing effort is needed in understanding the meaning,with an exception in the translation of some words or phrases in serious texts such as Bible.

The article The Explanatory Potential of Relevance Theory in Translation published by ZhaoYanchun(1999)drew more scholars’attention to this theory.Zhao argued that the translationprocess,once reviewed as a dynamic ostensive-inferential process of the original language,providesa large unified theoretical framework for translation.It proposes an innovative translation theorymodel.We can say that these scholars started the journey of relevance translation theory in China.
